alpaca update

I have pictures of the alpacas that will be sharing some fiber with me.

Yoda

Meet Yoda

Teddy

And Teddy

Negotiations are still ongoing as to what to pay for the fiber and what fiber should be bought first. Apparently there are many years of fleeces from Yoda and Teddy. The owner of the alpacas is willing to give me fleeces for free, but I don’t want to take advantage of her.  I also don’t want to give her a lot of money only to realize that the fleeces are damaged or need a lot of work or not sheared well or whatever. I don’t think this will be the case, but I’m buying from someone who knows little to nothing about caring for fleeces. I’ve had no practical experience, but I’ve been reading on blogs and websites and in books (my local library has been getting a workout with all the requests and searches I’ve been doing).

Yoda's crimp

I also received a picture of Yoda’s crimp

Sheared Teddy

and Teddy after he was sheared.

Don’t you love the change?

Oh, and my brother has turned out to be one of the best listeners to my gushing about knitting and spinning and fiber. So when I heard the news that I was getting some fleeces from these pretty pretty guys, I called him and said I was getting some fiber from a lady who owned some alpaca and then I stopped and asked him if he knew what alpacas were. I didn’t know before I started spinning, so I didn’t think he knew. He said, “I know what alpacas are.” I was surprised and said, “How do you know?” His tone turned slightly offended but still joking, “I’ve been around you know.” So I backtracked a bit, “I’m not saying you’re a bumpkin, but I didn’t know about alpacas and I’m honestly curious where you heard about them.” So he tells me, “You know that show Dirty Jobs right? That’s one of my favorite shows and one time he shaved an alpaca.” I loved that. Now I really wish I had caught that episode of Dirty Jobs so I could see Mike Rowe “shave an alpaca.”
