little experiments (picture heavy post)

So Bear and I finally finally finally bought a new camera.

new camera

Not that we really needed one, but we’ve been talking about buying a digital SLR for almost a year now. Bear and I have a tendency to do that. Anything above $100 usually takes months of talking and research and looking and talking and walking away and then starting over again. Actually, the number of months are pretty proportional to the amount spent. $200, is about two months. $300, three months. etc. The camera took longer because we really didn’t need it. I’d taken some classes back in high school and while point and shoot cameras are nice, I missed my manual. (I have it, but it sits gathering dust because I can’t stand buying film and having to have it processed). I’m super happy with the camera we got. Wanna see some pictures?

First I wandered around our neighborhood.

rose bush

Roses really were popular.

I wonder if the neighbors have as much trouble with the school kids picking their flowers and killing their flowers as we do.

But then I went inside for some real tests (also, it was getting dark…)

Red Sox 1 finished

The red sock looks a little too orange on my screen, but the fact that this camera could take a picture of the sock is an improvement over the other one. My old little point and shoot Nikon would end up with red blurs with strong, indirect sunlight. And then I realized I’d completely forgotten about a certain project.

Haruha folded

I found it tangled with a bra (I have no idea) on the couch under two throw pillows. Tonight I will wash and block the silly thing so that I can mail it!

strawberry fields singles

This is the first bobbin of strawberry fields. I’m about… 2/3rds of the way through. I’m so excited to see how these colors end up matching with the other singles.

rambouillet singles

And finally, the Rambouillet singles that I’m going to use to start swatching for the Wedding Ring Shawl. I’m going to make it a long swatch and when I’m done just call it a scarf. I’ve taken no information down on these singles. I just kept spinning on it until I was ready to spin the strawberry fields. Then I stopped. I have enough singles to get started, but soon I’ll have to go back and spin more. I have plenty of fiber and since this is as thin as I can comfortably spin there shouldn’t be a problem matching these singles.

Some of the pictures were shot with the camera in point and shoot mode, most of them were shot with me playing with the settings and a few were with all the auto features turned off (or at least, as many as I could). I’m still learning all the settings on the camera, but I’m having so much fun it almost makes me want to go buy film and take out the old camera again. I don’t know why, but I do have a slight pull. Probably nostalgia.

Spinning update in pictures

Haven’t felt much like talkin.

Sample of Strawberry Fields

Little overplied (wiry and twisty). I’ll take it down a notch when I ply up the main batch.
