Whatever your heart needs

It seems like every day lately is a new adventure. I’m scattering all over trying to get a job. Bear is scattering all over for his jobs (new and old). He recently flew to a city and back in the same day with a layover each way while also with the flu and on antibiotics. That was a shitty day. A ton more for Bear (who had a panic attack on one of the tiniest planes), but I was ground control for him and he had no phone and his third flight was delayed which meant he was going to miss his fourth flight. I freaked out all over a nice man from United who was very very kind. I know United has a crap reputation, but that guy, whose name I didn’t get, was a sweetheart.

Today he’s on a train to take him to NYC and he’ll be back tonight. My brother is flying into town this afternoon. Bear doesn’t have a phone because Verizon Wireless sucks major balls. It’s a stupid ugly story where basically their sales and customer service pretty much lied and hung up on me for over a week. After charging me. For two phones that hadn’t even shipped. It’s so infuriating that I don’t even know what I’m doing about it yet. Probably we are going to refuse delivery of the phones and not go with Verizon Wireless I guess.

So I gave Bear my phone and he borrowed a blackberry from his work for me to use. That way he can amuse himself on the train with books and internet and such. My brother can call me when he lands and then tonight I’ll get my phone and credit card back. Oh right. That’s the other thing. Our printer fucking gave up the ghost last night while I was trying to print out the barcode for Bear to get his Amtrak tickets. And since I bought his tickets with my credit card and we’ve never taken the train before, we weren’t sure if HIS credit card would work. It SHOULD because he’s the passenger, but 6am was not the time to be testing shit out.

We were supposed to get there earlier but this morning was also a little snow storm that made the normally 30 minute drive into a 45-50 minute drive. I normally have no problem driving in snow storms, but I don’t normally drive that stretch of highway in the dark during a snowstorm because that stretch of highway doesn’t have any lamps/street lights. It was a little tense in the car.

Now he’s safely on a train and I’m finishing the lab cleanup I was asked to do. Today is my last official day in the lab. Tomorrow I’m proctoring a test, but that’s the last time I’m scheduled to come on campus.

(Linda, the song is California by Delta Spirit and the lyric is “I want you to move to California for yourself, I want you to find whatever your heart needs”.)

P.S. I might think this is remarkable just because I adore the man, but after I dropped him off he texted the stupid blackberry: “Thanks again. You got me off safely.” He’s ridiculous, but adorable.

“Could you imagine burning platinum for energy?”

Tuesdays I usually talk about something… nonfrivolous. To me at least. The first Tuesday I talked about how I have heroes and decided that I would dedicate Thursdays to them. That project is turning out to be VERY difficult for me. The second Tuesday I talked about losing power from the Nor’easter.

Today it’s gonna be about power again, but this time about sources of power, not the effects of living without it.

A while ago, Bear and I watched a documentary. It’s clearly a low budget kind of thing and it’s entirely available on Youtube. It’s 2 hours long. It’s about how we generate power and specifically, why there are very good reasons to develop nuclear power plants, but not like the reactors we HAVE been using. This reactor is a Molten Salt or Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor, also called LFTR (lifter).

This might sound horribly boring, but this video manages to be compelling. I was exhausted and Bear started the video at 11pm, telling me that we could finish it the next day. We finished it at 1am. Watch it. Just try the first 5 minutes. Please. I’ll knit you something if you do.

Nor’easter

On 10/29/2011 at approximately 7p.m., Bear and I lost power. We did not get our electricity back until 11:45a.m. 10/31/2011. For two people whose whole house is centered around modern technology and electricity and haven’t had to deal with long term power loss since they were kids, this kinda knocked us ass over teakettle.

Our heat/hot water system runs on propane, but the controls for this state of the art system are electric. So we were without heat or hot water, despite having full propane tanks.

Our entertainment almost entirely is centered around our computers, ebook readers, and cell phones. Thankfully, the ebook reader and cell phones kept a charge for most of that time, despite heavy usage.

Our stove is electric. Our refrigerator is electric.

Thankfully, our water is town water, so we did have running water. One of our neighbors has well water and her pump is electric. She is an old hat at this though and when the snow started coming down in earnest, she filled her washing machine with water so that she could manually flush her toilets. She also had drinking and washing water stocked up from when we were all worried about Hurricane Irene.

It’s interesting living without electricity. It changes your perception of time. Bear and I went to bed very early on Saturday. It felt late though, because the sun had been down for hours. We woke up very early on Sunday and the day felt like it lasted a million years. We cooked on our grill. We heated water on our grill.

We read books and talked and saw more of our neighbors than we’ve seen in weeks. We napped a lot too. When your house is 48 degrees inside, the warmest place is under blankets cuddled up next to each other. (Well, the other warmest place isn’t in your house, it’s in the neighbors house in their room with the wooden stove/fireplace insert.) We considered storing food outside on the snow. That one isn’t new though. In the winter in New England, you can keep food outside as long as you don’t mind it being frozen.

We smelled like smoke from the grill for almost the whole time period. You stop noticing it after a while.

You don’t stop flicking light switches. I can’t tell you how many times I’d walk to the bathroom and hit the light switch. I HAD A FLASHLIGHT IN MY HAND, and I would still automatically reach for the light switch. It’s so instinctive.

I’m pretty sure we are going to be making a few changes to our house soon. One will be some kind of wood insert for heat. One will be buying a teakettle. One might be buying a battery backup for our electric heating system. And finally, we’ll buy the little butane tanks for our little butane camping burner. Having that stupid burner, but no fuel kinda drove me nuts.

We weren’t without power for very long (many people lost power for a week from this storm and earlier in the year, Irene), but it did make us consider how prepared we were. We were also very grateful when the power came back Monday. Plenty of people didn’t get power back for a week and many had been hit earlier in the year by Hurricane Irene. Many had damage from either or both storms. We were lucky.

How the modern stay scared

Bear and I have been busy bees. My Gilligan came to visit and then Bear and I went to my hometown for a family thing. Bear and I ended up having a kind of shitty trip. It started off ok, but the last straw was the plane flight home. To preface this story, Bear snores. When he’s in bed, he snores REALLY loud, but when he’s sitting up, it’s mostly pretty soft. Also, our flight was turbulent. A lot of shaking and upset. Last point of note, he’s got the aisle seat and I’m in the middle.

So we get on the plane and Bear falls asleep while we are taxing down the runway. After he falls asleep I’m trying to get comfy and I notice the lady across the aisle from him is MAD. I’m not sure at what, but she’s glaring. After takeoff the kid in front of Bear leans his chair back. Bear wakes up when the chair jams into his knees and sticks one foot in the aisle and the other in front of me. I readjust myself and notice the woman is GLARING at Bear’s foot. I’m like great, she’s one of those that is pissed that he’s too big or that he’s not following the strict rules. To avoid her saying something, I wake Bear up when the flight attendants come by, especially when they have the cart.

A few minutes after we’ve all settled back down with drinks, Bear gets jostled pretty bad when the lady gets up. She jabs her knee or foot into him. I couldn’t see exactly because at this point I wasn’t paying attention. Thankfully Bear goes back to sleep. Now, until this lady jabs him, NO ONE ELSE on the plane has had any trouble with Bear’s foot. I can see how it’s a little rude of him. If the kid in front of him hadn’t leaned back, he would have kept his knees in his space, but short of cutting off his legs, there just wasn’t a lot of options at this point.

After the lady sits back down, I start kinda keeping an eye on her. Not seriously, but she’s starting to wig me out a bit with all her glaring and her deliberately(?) jabbing Bear. About 30 or so minutes pass and suddenly she reaches across the aisle and shoves Bear in the shoulder saying “Some of us would like to sleep too!” Bear and I were in complete shock. I started to get angry at this point. Bear put on his headphones and cranked up his ipod to try and keep himself awake.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be because a few minutes later I realized I desperately needed to pee. I was also still very very upset. When I was waiting in line for the bathroom, a flight attendant was hanging back there for a few minutes after she’d finished cleaning. I decided to explain the situation and ask her if she thought we should call them if something else happened. The FA asked if we’d said anything to the lady and upon discovering that we hadn’t, advised us to call them if ANYTHING happened.

I eventually go back to my seat. Bear eventually falls asleep. The lady eventually wakes up. I then hear her muttering. Then I hear her saying “HOW CAN YOU BE SO INCONSIDERATE?!? THIS IS A FULL FLIGHT DO YOU NOT REALIZE?” I ignore it and scrunch down into my seat. I didn’t even think about the FA at this point. I just couldn’t believe she was going to be just that loud. The guy who was in the seat behind Bear was standing in the aisle. He heard her. I heard her. The people in front and behind her heard her. But Bear still had headphones on his head. I didn’t get how she thought he could hear her

A few minutes later the FA comes by with water and because I’m hyper sensitive I see her take some. I think “Great. Drink some water and calm your ass down.” I should have known this wouldn’t work. I see her clenching her little cup to the point that it starts to crumple a bit. I start getting anxious. I really want her to hold her shit together. We have less than an hour left on the flight.

Of course she stands up though before she’s even finished her water. The guy that was in the aisle moves into his seat to let her pass. She reaches for the back of Bear’s seat. There’s no turbulence at this point. She SHOVES hard and Bear’s seat slams back, waking him and startling me and the standing dude. My blood boils and I loudly call “M’am!”. In that second the standing guy moves back into the aisle preventing her from moving away. She ignores me and I continue to call “M’am!” at a woman standing less than 4 feet from me. After about 4 times she gives me this false innocent confused look and says “Yes?” I said “Could you please leave my husband alone?” She says, “I was just trying to get past this man here.” I said “This isn’t the first time you’ve woken my husband, could you please leave him alone?” She looks at me and says “Im going to get the flight attendant.” My hand shot up and pushed the call button.

At this point Bear was trying desperately to get me to let it go and I tried to explain to him that I needed her to stop. She had been making me tense this whole flight almost. I then hear the flight attendant ask the lady “Did you touch her husband?” I assume the lady had told her that I was causing a commotion. The lady responds “I was just touching the back of his chair.” The flight attendant says “Did you touch her husband earlier?” The lady shifts back towards Bear’s chair and touches the back as if to demonstrate, “Right now, I just touched the back of it” The flight attendants voice gets kind of stringent. “Did you AT ANY TIME touch her husband?” The lady clearly has had enough as well “HE WAS SNORING.”

At this point I’m pretty sure the crazy must have been obvious on her face too because the Flight Attendant shuffled the lady away. We were told they were going to see if she was agreeable to moving seats. Bear was told very kindly that he should not be touched or allowed to feel bad for snoring on an airplane. Apparently the lady didn’t want to move though because right before we all had to be seated for landing she pops back into her seat. She didn’t look at us or say anything for the rest of the flight.

True story. Lets just say Bear and I gave her PLENTY of space when we were getting off the plane.
